PDX Winter Was Made for Families
There are way too many fun things to do in Portland all year round, and just because the weather is a little chilly doesn’t mean that the denizens of PDX are afraid to come out to play! Here are some fun festivals for the whole family to enjoy in Portland during the month of February.
Portland Winter Light Festival
For a truly illuminating experience, visit the Portland Winter Light Festival, taking place from February 7th to February 9th from 6-11 PM. This Willamette Light Brigade Event features, according to the event website: “illuminated art installations, vibrant performances and stunning kinetic fire sculptures throughout our city.” The Portland Winter Light Festival is family-friendly and features over 100 artists and organizations from all over the region.
Treemendous Second Saturdays
Help your kids gain a new appreciation for Portland’s amazing flora with a visit to the World Forestry Center Discovery Museum on February 9th for hands-on learning experiences about trees and forests and their importance to our daily lives.
Wing It
If nature isn’t quite what you’re in the mood for in February, or before you hit the museum, you can check out Wing It on the morning of February 9th. Wing It, at the Osterman Theatre in Oregon City, is an interactive dance series featuring a professional clown and Middle School teacher, a team of talented dancers, and some great opportunities for the audience to join in the fun!
Valentine’s Day With Smokey Robinson
If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day event that the whole family can appreciate, come on down to the Oregon Symphony on February 14th for an evening with the Motown legend, as Smokey Robinson is set to perform all his greatest hits live and in person.
Reel Music 36
Through February 16th, you can take the family to the NW Film Center for Reel Music 36, a fantastic film festival featuring the latest in music film, with just about every genre of music you can think of represented on one night or another, from blues to rock to classical and more.
Read to the Dogs
If you and your family like dogs and you love reading, then you’ve just found the perfect activity. Head to Read to the Dogs at the North Portland Library on February 19th, or choose from one of the many other dates, times and locations during the month.
Sponsored by Pet Partners®, this feel-good activity gives your kids the opportunity to sharpen their reading skills while helping an animal companion and the community by reading aloud to therapy dogs. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
Wizard World Comic Con
Fans of comic books both young and old will not want to miss it when the Wizard World comic con comes to Portland on February 22, 23, and 24th. One of the most well-known and successful comic book conventions, this event at the Oregon Convention Center will feature games, great costumes, comic books (of course), and guest appearances by DC Universe stars Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”), Melissa Benoist, and Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl and Superman from T.V.’s “Supergirl”). Whether you’re new to the super hero craze or you’re an old-school comics nerd, it’s a great time for the whole family.
