Pick Your Own Adventure: U-Pick Farms Around Portland & Vancouver
Summer in the Pacific Northwest has a rhythm all its own, and if you know what's in season, you know it's time to grab a flat, load up the car, and head out to a u-pick farm.
Whether you're hunting for sun-warmed strawberries, blueberries by the bucketful, or a flower bouquet you cut yourself, the Portland-Vancouver area delivers. Here's your guide to some of the best spots to get your hands dirty this season.
Sauvie Island: The Holy Grail of Local Picking
If there's one destination that defines summer farm life around here, it's Sauvie Island, just a 20-minute drive from northwest Portland.
Topaz Farm is a 130-acre no-spray, regenerative family farm with u-pick berries, fresh produce, farm animals, seasonal festivals, and farm-to-plate dinners, plus a farm market to browse on your way out. They also host a concert series running July through August, with folk, country, R&B and bluegrass acts set against the backdrop of u-pick fields and the farm's bar and grill.
Columbia Farms U-Pick, a bit further down Gillihan Road, is open Tuesday through Sunday and known for being a lower-key, under-the-radar choice. They offer multiple berry varieties and even a picnic area. Pack a lunch and make an afternoon of it!
Bella Organic Farm is the only certified organic u-pick in the area, and their 2026 season is officially open. They take picking seriously (it's a working farm, not a petting zoo), so come ready to fill those boxes.
Sauvie Island Blueberry Farm’s peak season of berry picking (all varieties!) is June and July. They’re open 8am-6pm daily and open until 8pm for Golden Hour picking on Thursdays.
Heading East: The Gresham Side
If you're coming from the east side, the Gresham and Troutdale areas have a quiet cluster of blueberry farms worth knowing about. Nappe Blueberry Farm is open Wednesday through Sunday, June through August. Small, low-key, and the kind of place you stumble onto and then tell everyone about.
Hood River & the Gorge: The Day-Trip Worth Taking
If you're up for an adventure about an hour east of Portland, the Hood River area is a whole different level of u-pick magic — think orchard views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, crisp mountain air, and fruit you genuinely can't find at the grocery store.
Hood River U-Pick Organic specializes in certified organic cherries in the summer, heirloom tomatoes, and Honeycrisp apples in the fall, with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs scattered throughout the orchard. The trees can get picked clean fast, so go early and follow their social media for opening updates.
Located on the “Fruit Loop” in Hood River, Hilda’s U-Pick offers herbicide-free blueberries, tomatoes, peaches, and cherries in the summer.
For those who want to make a full loop of it, the East Gorge Food Trail around Mosier features a collection of u-pick cherry and peach orchards, and further west, Draper Girls Country Farm offers apples, cherries, peaches, and pears along with award-winning cider, locally made gifts, seasonal festivals, and stunning mountain views. Pack a cooler…you'll want room for everything you bring home!
There's something genuinely grounding about picking your own food, especially when you're surrounded by the farmland that makes this region so special. Whether you're staying close to home or making a day of it out in the Gorge, a u-pick trip is one of those simple summer traditions worth making every year.
Across the River: Vancouver & Southwest Washington
Don't sleep on the Washington side!
Van Laeken Farms is a small, locally owned farm in Ridgefield, WA with a season that typically runs June through mid-August.
Majestic Farms Blueberries is a family-owned farm that's been growing blueberries for over 40 years, offering both u-pick and pre-picked options. Open Monday through Friday 8am–8pm and Sundays 8am–7pm, it's one of the more generous schedules you'll find. Great for a spontaneous weekday outing or a lazy Sunday morning. If you can't make it out in person, they also have an online store for pre-picked orders.
Annie's Berry Farm in La Center (about 40 minutes north of Portland) offers u-pick raspberries and blueberries, with a fresh market for already-picked fruit and local honey.
