SOUTHWEST PORTLAND
A little bit classic Portland,
a little bit all its own.
Southwest Portland sits on the west bank of the Willamette River, stretching from the river's edge up into the hills. Unlike a lot of Portland's other quadrants, it doesn't stop at a tidy grid line. SW Portland technically reaches from Burnside south past the Ross Island Bridge, nearly to the Sellwood Bridge, then climbs west up into the hills to meet the NW neighborhoods. As the crow flies, it runs out to roughly 65th Avenue, bordering Beaverton, Tigard, and Lake Oswego along the way. It's a big, varied stretch of the city, and it feels like it.

Downtown, on the West
Side of the River
Downtown Portland itself (everything south of Burnside) is technically part of the SW Portland Neighborhoods, and it's worth a mention of its own. This is the most urban corner of the west side: high-rises and historic buildings side by side, the Willamette River waterfront and Tom McCall Waterfront Park just steps away, streetcar and MAX lines running right through it, and easy walkability to restaurants, shopping, and the Cultural District. It's a different pace than the rest of SW with condo and apartment living instead of big yards, but it's the anchor the whole west side orbits around.
West of downtown,
it's a different lifestyle
Once you head up into the hills, SW Portland starts to feel less like the city and more like its own world - closer in spirit to a suburb than to the east side's tighter grid of sidewalks and bungalows. Streets wind and climb, often without sidewalks at all.
That said, "suburban" doesn't mean isolated. A handful of SW neighborhoods have kept their own walkable little downtowns. Multnomah Village, Hillsdale, and Burlingame all have a main street you can stroll to for coffee, a bakery run, or dinner out. Others are built around green space instead - Washington Park and Tryon Creek State Natural Area offer some of the largest, most accessible wooded areas in the city, right in residents' backyards.
Southwest Portland is genuinely diverse from one neighborhood to the next. Hillside estates with skyline views in Southwest Hills and Council Crest, mid-century family homes in Hayhurst and Hillsdale, small-town charm in Multnomah Village, and quieter, more residential streets the further out you go toward the Tigard and Lake Oswego borders.
Most areas have good schools, local parks, restaurants and shops with a strong community feeling. Traffic can be tricky at certain times of the day if you’re commuting downtown or to the east side of town.

Public Transportation
TriMet bus routes connect Southwest Portland with Downtown Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Lake Oswego and OHSU. Major routes include the 12-Barbur, 35-Macadam, 44-Capitol Highway, 54-Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and 56-Scholls Ferry.
South Waterfront also offers access to the MAX Orange Line, Portland Streetcar and Portland Aerial Tram. Public transportation access varies by neighborhood, with the most options concentrated along major corridors and in close-in areas.
